Suresh, a native of Veluthur, has been remanded in custody in connection with the death of 47-year-old Sherin P John after long iron rods from Suresh's pickup van fell on him while he was travelling on his bike on Friday. Sherin was a native of Kuttanellur in Ollur.
Ollur police had registered a case against Suresh under Sections 281 (rash or negligent driving that endangers human life) and 106(1) (causing a person's death by a rash or negligent act) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The incident took place around 9.30 am when the vehicle carrying rods and pipes, which was allegedly being driven rashly and negligently, applied sudden brakes near HiLITE Mall on the Thrissur-Kuttanellur road. The iron rods fell on Sherin, who was riding in the same direction in front of the vehicle, as they were only loosely secured on top of it.
Onlookers and local residents rushed to his aid after he was trapped under the rods.
Sherin sustained injuries to his head and body and was rushed to a nearby private hospital. Doctors declared him dead around 10.15 am. Based on statements from Sherin's relatives and accompanying CCTV visuals, an FIR was registered, and the driver was arrested and produced before the First Class Magistrate Court, Thrissur.
