Thodupuzha: Two people died and two others were injured after a concrete slab of a building collapsed on them in Thodupuzha's Muthalakodam on Monday afternoon.
The deceased have been identified as Joy PJ (60) of Pulimuttil, Kothamangalam, and Anoop of Malayinkeezhu. The injured are migrant workers Govindaraj (44), a native of Rajapalayam, and Mithil Mandal (25), a native of West Bengal. Both sustained serious injuries.
The accident occurred while renovation work was underway at Sanjo Bhavan, an old-age home run by priests near Muthalakodam Girls High School. The workers were engaged in dismantling the concrete structure when a sunshade gave way and fell on them.
Four people were trapped under the debris. They were rescued and shifted to Muthalakodam Hospital, where doctors confirmed the deaths of Joy and Anoop.
“All four men were shifted to the hospital, where doctors confirmed the deaths of two of them. We are about to leave for the hospital to collect more details,” an official told the media.
The police said they had not been informed about the renovation work being carried out at the site. “We were not informed about the work. They undertook it at their own risk,” an officer said.
Officials said they were investigating possible violations in the construction work carried out at the site and that further details would be available only after the probe progresses.
Personnel from the Thodupuzha Fire and Rescue Services and police jointly carried out the rescue operation.
