Alappuzha: Sebastian Vincent has a superhero power - presence of mind. The 12-year-old boy used this power to save his schoolmate from coming under a speeding train near Alappuzha on Tuesday.

Vincent ended up with a cast on his left hand but he is happy that his buddy is alive to give him a hand.

Vincent, a class six student at the Leo XIII Higher Secondary School in Alappuzha, was crossing the railway track near the Mangalam cross on the way to school along with K.R. Abhijit, his senior by a year, and a few other friends when the older boy fell in the middle of the track with his bicycle.

Abhijit was trapped under the weight of his bicycle and the school bag. The five boys froze when they heard the train chugging along but Vincent rushed into the track and lifted the bicycle. Abhijit got up but was too hazed to walk out of danger. Vincent kicked him out and jumped out of the track in the nick of time. The train zoomed past them.

Vincent’s mother and neighbors rushed to the spot on hearing the news. The boy had landed on his left hand. He was taken to the Alappuzha General Hospital and then to the Alappuzha Medical College Hospital. His hand was put in a cast because a bone was dislocated.

The boys said they chose to cross the track since the railway gate was closed for the train to pass.
