Kottayam: True, Kannur has recently witnessed a number of horrific political murders, shocking the conscience of entire Kerala. The district is infamous for the increasing number of violent incidents between various party workers.
But that does not make a Kannur native denounce her homeland, writes singer Sayanora Philip in a Facebook post that has gone viral.
Sayanora took to social media as she got fed up with the social media jokes that suggested India should hand over Kannur to Pakistan instead of Kashmir.
“I was born and brought up here and I know the people here. They are not fake, they are truly genuine and innocent at their hearts,” the singer wrote on her Facebook page.

“The hospitality we Kannurites have is outstanding and is acknowledged by the whole state. Even though I travel a lot for my work, this is the one place I yearn to be back again, my home, my Kannur, my people,” she added.
“I accept that political killings are unfortunate and I hope, like anyone else, that they will end soon. But please do stay away from making fun of Kannur, I am very proud of it. You may feel free to abuse or make fun about my place, I will embrace it till my last breath,” she stated.
The post found huge support from several people, including others in the entertainment industry, and was widely shared on social media platforms.
Seconding Sayanora's stance, writer-actor Ahmed Sidhique wrote, “Well said! Noticed the forwards and felt the same way as you. Kannur is a gem and let's not forget that when we talk politics.”
Another comment by Facebook user Lohit Chandran read, “If I know that the stranger I'm talking to is from Kannur, I actually have a sense of relief. I'm damn sure that even if I don't want to trust any Keralite, I can trust a Kannur person even with my eyes closed.”
