New Delhi: Kerala scored a thrilling one-run win over Uttar Pradesh in the Vijay Hazare Trophy national one-day championships here on Thursday.

UP, chasing a victory target of 229, were well on their way to victory with captain Suresh Raina (66) at the crease. However, once the southpaw was caught short by a Salman Nizar throw, UP lost their way. They slumped to 164/7 from a healthy 152/3 and were eventually bowled out for 227 in the Elite Group B match. Kerala spinners Jalal Saxena, K C Akshay and Vinoop Manoharan claimed two wickets each.

Earlier, Kerala rode on V A Jagadeesh's fine 82 to post 228 in their 50 overs after being put in to bat. Jagadeesh's 101-ball knock contained eight fours and he added 94 for the fifth wicket in the company of Salman (43).

Openers Vishnu Vinod (31) and Saxena (36) had put on 50 for the first wicket before Kerala collapsed to 78/4. Jagadeesh and Salman made sure Kerala had a fighting score and their bowlers defended it.

Kerala, who have 14 points from seven matches, next meet Saurashtra on Monday.
