Former India cricketer Robin Uthappa was questioned for eight hours on Monday by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with a money laundering case linked to the online betting app 1xBet.
ED officials told news agencies that Uthappa's statement was recorded under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). Former players Suresh Raina and Shikhar Dhawan were also questioned in recent weeks in connection with betting apps.
Another retired cricketer, Yuvraj Singh, has been summoned to appear before the ED on Tuesday in the same case. The ED probe is based on the allegation that the betting app duped numerous people of crores of rupees and evaded direct and indirect taxes.
The Curacao-registered 1xBet is a globally recognised bookmaker with 18 years in the betting industry. Recently, the BJP-led Centre banned real-money online gaming in India with legislation.
