Shubman Gill is likely to become India's new ODI captain for the Australia series.
Shubman Gill has been appointed as India's new ODI captain for the upcoming three-match series against Australia, replacing veteran Rohit Sharma.
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have both been selected in the Indian squad, marking their return to the team for the first time since the 2025 Champions Trophy in March.
The team announcement also came as a surprise, as senior player Jasprit Bumrah was dropped from the squad.
The decision to appoint Gill as ODI captain was driven by the selectors' intention to give the Test skipper enough time to settle into the role ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup, which will be held in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. The move was a joint decision taken by chief selector Ajit Agarkar in consultation with India head coach Gautam Gambhir and BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia.
The selection panel, headed by former Indian player Ajit Agarkar, met on Saturday to select the team.
Gill, who is also India's T-20 vice captain, took charge of the Test team after Rohit's retirement from the format in May.
