Chris Gayle arrives in Kerala, sees KCL as launchpad for young Malayali cricketers

West Indies cricketing legend Chris Gayle has hailed the Kerala Cricket League as a vital platform for young talent to showcase their skills and earn national recognition. Speaking in Thiruvananthapuram, the explosive former opener, who is a co-owner and mentor of the Kochi Blue Tigers, expressed his delight at returning to Kerala and engaging with the state's vibrant sports culture.

The press conference, organised by the Kochi Blue Tigers franchise at a private hotel in the capital, was also attended by team owner Subhash George Manuel, captain Sali Samson, and vice-captain Basil Thampi. Gayle began by thanking Manuel for inviting him to be a part of the franchise and bringing him back to a region he holds close to his heart.

A launchpad for future stars
Gayle emphasised that high-quality regional tournaments are the backbone of modern cricket development. "Kerala is home to an incredible pool of cricketing talent, and the KCL is the golden opportunity they need," Gayle remarked. "It is through highly competitive local leagues of this calibre that international stars are discovered and groomed."

Stepping into the mentor's shoes
Transitioning from his legendary exploits on the field to a strategic role off it, Gayle shared his excitement about his new responsibility. As a co-owner and mentor, his focus is on actively guiding the squad. "I am thoroughly enjoying my role as a mentor. My goal is to share my decades of international experience, tactical insights, and pitch strategies directly with these youngsters to help them elevate their game," he added.

Addressing the current state of West Indies cricket, which has faced a challenging phase in recent years, Gayle expressed strong optimism. He assured fans and media that the Windies would bounce back stronger and reclaim their spot among the elite teams of world cricket.

A love for local flavours
Beyond cricket, the self-proclaimed 'Universe Boss' spoke warmly about his affection for Kerala's lifestyle and culinary offerings. Gayle revealed that he is a big fan of the state's traditional cuisine, particularly the rich and aromatic Kerala-style fish curry, which remains his absolute favourite.
