Colombo: For the first time in cricketing history, a mixed-gender cricket tournament will be played at the Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) in Sri Lanka. The tournament will feature an 80-over format and will commence here on November 14 and run until the final on November 29.
The new-format tournament called Test Twenty will feature 160 young cricketers, aged 13 to 21, who will be drafted from around the world into four continental teams. The girls' and boys' squads will play for the same team, and the combined runs scored will fall into one result.
Each team will have a squad of 40 players, including 20 girls and 20 boys. Each match will be played in a single day, using both red and white balls. The first 40 over-innings will be played in whites, with the red ball, during daylight. The final 40 overs will be played in colour, with the white ball under floodlights.
Girls will only bowl to girls while boys will bowl to boys. The girls and boys teams will play an innings of 20 overs, while a maximum of 5 bowlers can be used in an XI. One bowler can bowl up to 6 overs, if needed. The captain in each gender's innings can make the call before the end of the 10th over.
AB de Villiers, Matthew Hayden, and Sir Clive Lloyd will be at the helm of an advisory board of the tournament. Renowned Delhi coach Rajkumar Sharma will be the chief of the Global Selection Committee, and the tournament's operations will be led by Mike Fordham.
