Thank you, Kochi, from the bottom of my heart: India’s goalscorer Ryan Williams

Ryan Williams and his fellow Indian players were impressed by the overwhelming support shown by football fans in Kerala during the AFC Asian Cup qualifier win over Hong Kong in Kochi on March 31.

“I just want to say a massive thank you from the bottom of my heart,” Ryan Williams said after a thrilling 2-1 win at the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium, with more than 22,000 in attendance. “Not only for the team, but for me personally, for making the night even more special,” Williams thanked the Kochi crowd.

Perth-born Williams was on his debut for Team India, having recently accepted citizenship. He made the occasion special by scoring India’s opener in the 4th minute. Akash Mishra netted his first goal in the famous Blue jersey as India made it 2-0, and despite a second-half goal from the visitors, Khalid Jamil’s side prevailed.

“Kochi, you beauty. Football is the living heart of this city and it’s been an immense privilege to be supported by this amazing crowd,” posted India goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu on his X account.

During a media interaction post-match, Williams was reminded that the win was a first for Team India at the Kochi stadium since it was constructed in 1996. His immediate reaction was: “Jesus Christ!”

“It wouldn't have mattered if we didn't win, so for us to win... beautiful... There was a lot of pride at stake, so we're really happy to get a win,” said the 32-year-old Bengaluru FC striker.
