FIFA President Gianni Infantino claimed on March 31 that Iran will travel to the US for the FIFA World Cup 2026 despite the ongoing Middle East conflict.

All 48 spots available in the FIFA World Cup 2026 have been taken following the completion of the play-offs. Iraq were the last team to book their berth, with victory over Bolivia. The Asian nation have qualified for the World Cup after 1986, while former champions Italy missed out for the third edition in a row.

Czechia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Turkiye, Sweden and Congo were the other five teams to book their places in the World Cup through play-offs. The FIFA World Cup 2026 will be held in the United States, Canada and Mexico, starting June 11.

FIFA released an updated match schedule following the completion of the play-off. Only a few minor changes were made in the latest list, with the kick-off time of Turkiye-Paraguay on June 19 moved an hour earlier, and the preceding match between Brazil and Haiti in Philadelphia, moved 30 minutes earlier.

However, FIFA has yet to address an issue it might face should Iran pull out of the event. The Iranian Football Association wants their group stage matches in the US to be moved to Mexico due to political tensions with the co-hosts.

The ongoing Middle East crisis, in which the US and Israeli forces are involved in armed conflict with Iran, is the reason for the Iranian FA's change of stance. Meanwhile, FIFA President Gianni Infantino dismissed the possibility of a venue change.

"No, no, the matches will be where they should be according to the draw," Infantino told reporters in the Turkish city of Antalya, where the Iran squad has been holding a training camp.

"It looks like we'll be in the right grounds. We're delighted because they're a very, very strong team, as we saw today. I'm very happy. I saw the team, I spoke to the players and the coaches," he said. Iran have yet to respond to Infantino's remarks.
