England threw everything they had at Ghana, but every route to goal remained blocked as the African side earned a valuable point in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Group L clash at Boston Stadium.

A glance at the statistics tells the story of England's frustration. The Three Lions dominated possession and passing throughout the contest, completing far more passes than their opponents and registering 19 attempts on goal. Yet only three of those efforts tested Ghana goalkeeper Benjamin Asare. Ghana, meanwhile, managed just two shots and one effort on target.

The first half saw England enjoy almost complete control of possession. Jude Bellingham, Declan Rice, Harry Kane and Noni Madueke repeatedly probed the Ghanaian defence through both the flanks and central areas. But Ghana's backline refused to give an inch, keeping Asare largely untroubled.

Most of England's efforts were either blocked by defenders or drifted off target. One of their better opportunities came in the 14th minute when Rice fired a free-kick over the crossbar. The midfielder continued to test Ghana from distance, but several of his attempts were deflected behind for corners.

England spent long periods camped inside the Ghana half, constantly searching for a breakthrough. Their dominance was reflected in the numbers, completing 343 passes compared to Ghana's 99 during the opening period.

The Three Lions remained patient despite their inability to break through and gradually increased the tempo as halftime approached. Madueke, in particular, looked the most likely source of a breakthrough, repeatedly troubling the Ghana defence with his direct running down the right wing.

Ghana emerged with greater attacking intent after the break, but England soon regained control of the contest.

Their best chance arrived in the 56th minute. England launched a swift counterattack that carried a level of speed and urgency missing from many of their earlier moves. The ball was worked down the left before Anthony Gordon's clever backheel released Djed Spence on the right. A series of quick passes around the penalty area pulled the Ghana defence out of shape before the ball found Madueke. His effort looked destined for goal but was bravely headed away by a defender.

What made the move stand out was the speed with which England shifted possession. For a brief moment, Ghana's usually organised defence appeared stretched and vulnerable, but they quickly regained their shape.

A few minutes later, Kane found space in a central position and fired towards goal, only for Asare to gather comfortably.

England continued to press forward in search of a winner, but Ghana's defence stood firm. The Africans used their physicality effectively, preventing England's attackers from finding space inside the penalty area. Whenever a shot came in, bodies were thrown into its path.

Another opportunity arrived in the 80th minute when Marc Guehi delivered a ball towards the far post for Bukayo Saka, but the danger was cleared before the Arsenal winger was flagged offside.

Ghana also produced a few promising moments on the counterattack, though England's defence dealt with them comfortably.

Operating largely in a compact 4-5-1 shape, Ghana succeeded in confining England to harmless areas for long stretches of the match. Despite the relentless pressure from the Three Lions, the breakthrough never came.

For England, it was a night of dominance without reward. For Ghana, it was a defensive performance full of discipline, resilience and determination that earned a precious point and kept their World Cup campaign firmly on track.

With this, both teams now have 4 points and have confirmed a knockout berth.
