Jakarta: India's Virdhawal Khade missed out on a podium finish by hundredth of a second in the 50m freestyle event of the Asian Games swimming competition here on Tuesday.

The 26-year-old failed to replicate the 22.43 seconds effort which he achieved en route to topping his heat in the morning and came fourth behind Nakao Shunichi of Japan. China's Yu Hexin won the gold (22.11), while Katsumi Nakamura of Japan (22.20) took the silver.

Khade, who had won a bronze at the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games in 50m butterfly, had broken the national record in the heat. But he was not one bit thrilled about it having lost the bronze by a whisker. "(National record) doesn’t really make a difference to me, here it’s all about medals, even if I had done a 25 seconds and got a medal, I would have been happy with that."

Khade, however, said that there was nothing much he could have done in the short event.

"I don’t think anything went wrong, but in a 50m, just like a 100m dash in athletics, it’s very difficult. You never know what has gone wrong. So, I think this was the best time to do, this evening. I think the medal definitely would have been good, unfortunately it didn’t happen."

Khade stills has two more events to go - the 50m butterfly and 100m freestyle on Thursday.
