Young Indian star Ayush Shetty upset former World Championship silver medallist Kodai Naraoka to enter the quarterfinals of the Hong Kong Open Super 500 badminton tournament on Thursday.
The 20-year-old from Karnataka defeated the former World No 2 singles ace 21-19, 12-21, 21-14. Shetty will face his compatriot Lakshya Sen in the quarterfinals. Shetty won the US Open Super 300 title in June.
Lakshya will be playing his first men's singles quarterfinals in a BWF World Tour event in six months. He defeated compatriot H S Prannoy from Thiruvananthapuram 15-21, 21-18, 21-10 in the second round.
Meanwhile, the men's doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty will clash with Malaysia's Junaidi Arif and Roy King Yap as they look to add to their bronze from the World Championships in Paris.
The star of the day was Shetty, who trailed the opening game against the experienced Naraoka -- 2-5, 9-12, 13-15 -- but eventually won it 21-19. The Japanese drew level in the second game, but Shetty bounced back to take an 8-4 lead in the decider. He kept up the pressure to stretch his lead to 17-10 and secured a memorable win.
