A sumptuous meal for lunch and a place where we could indulge in some tasty snacks and tea in the evening. That was all we needed on a Sunday afternoon. And our search lead us to Thawaf, an eatery in Chembumukku, Kochi. Thawaf offers a variety of Malabar style delicacies and snacks. And they specialise in Puthiyappla (bridegroom) delicacies, which are finger-licking good. The 'Puthiyappla delicacies' are the dishes cooked by a mother-in-law when the bridegroom visits the in-laws after the wedding. Also known as mother-in-law's recipes, these dishes are very popular in other parts of Kerala too. The owner, Abdul Sathar, says that the most popular items are 'Muttamala', a delicacy made of eggs, 'Romal Pathiri' and 'Omana Pathiri', which are varieties of rice dish.The ever-favourite banana snack Unnakaya, Kaipola, and Kilikoodu, a delicacy with potato and vermicelli, are the other attractions here. The speciality of course is that all fried dishes are made in coconut oil. Thawaf offers an exiting array of non vegetarian dishes too. 'Aattinthalapottitherichathu', a mutton dish which when translated means 'an exploding head of a goat' is one of the most popular dishes here. The dish is made of mutton head pieces and is served in an earthen pot. The other specialties here are peppery beef and chicken roast and dishes such as 'chicken anam vechathu', stuffed mussels and mussels, all cooked in coconut gravy. The variety with which Thawaf presents the day's catch is yet another crowd puller. The unique selling point that makes Thawaf a hot favourite among food buffs is its signature snacks.
