Kozhiyada, Irachipathiri, Kaiveeshal, Pazham nulliyittath, Mutta appam, Elanchi, Idli appam, Kozhikkaal, Kayppola, Kallummakkay, Beef Unnakka... The list of savories bearing the famed Malabari stamp is unending. They all are making their conspicuous presence at the Karukappally Junction in Kaloor with the onset of Ramzan. The sale of fast breaking dishes bearing the unique taste and sweetness of Malabar has caught on at Karukappally. Sales are thriving not just in restaurants and bakeries but also in the forty odd roadside stalls. People of other religious persuasions also flock to the place as the famed Malabari flavor has begun to set fire to the palates. The sale that begins at noon is active until late in the evening. Dishes cost from Rs 8 to Rs 25. These are prepared in the stalls and in neighboring homes. Vendor Sattar from Mattannur says that the Malabar samosa has the most admirers in Kochi. Samosas come in three varieties – beef, chicken, and vegetable. Onion baji, omanapathiri, bond and kozhiyada also cost Rs 8 each. Elanchi and irachi pathiri cost Rs 10 each.
