Toddy shops were never favourites with those going out to dine with their families. It was a joint exclusively for bachelors or those nostalgic about their bachelor days. The ambience in such shops never even remotely matched the requirements for a family outing. However, Mullapanthal, near Kochi, is different because it caters to the needs of the toddy cognoscente as well those in the family who are not particularly happy with toddy doing the rounds nearby. Along with pearl spot, beef, chicken and duck prepared using ethnic recipes and methods, you also get to sip a variety of toddy concoctions that are claimed to be unadulterated. The ambience is enhanced by the creepers that spread and cling to the roof (and so the name Mullapanthal). The highlight, of course, is the unique taste of food that is cooked only on firewood. The joint does not cook using any other medium. Even though the place is a toddy outlet, many come here for tasting the food, which is unique and has a lingering taste. Therefore even families that are not interested in a drink come here to taste the food. The spices that are used in the preparations are made here and the promoters have 75 years of experience in running toddy shops. The recipes are being managed by five women since decades. The speciality of this outlet is fish-head curries and rabbit meat. **Where?** MLA Road, Udayamperoor, Thrippunithura, Kochi Phone:0484 279 1227
