The enchanting Kabini woods on the banks of the beautiful Kabini River which flows through Kerala - Karnataka border is home to some of the rare species of flora and fauna. The forest area which is part of the Nagarhole tiger reserve or Rajiv Gandhi National Park is truly a storehouse of mesmerizing sights which draws hundreds of nature lovers to enjoy the splendours of it.

The sound of the safari vehicles alert the leopards resting on the branches of the trees. As per the official records, the number of leopards has significantly gone up here since 2017. So the chances to spot a majestic leopard in the Kabini forest is more, though with a bit of luck as well.

The sight of two grey jungle fowls fighting each other would remind one of the 'cockfight', a popular sport in certain parts of Tamil Nadu. The fierce warrior-like postures of the fowls adds to the incredible beauty of the birds. The bar-headed goose, one of the world's highest flying birds, migrates in large numbers to the pristine banks of the Kabini River during April-May. These are in fact one of the rare avian species which migrates to India by flying over the Himalayas.

The grave silence of the forest is torn apart by the various sounds that the animals make to communicate with each other. They express their hunger, grief, love and even warn their herd about the looming danger by making unique noises. The most heart breaking among them would be the sound of pain and loss that comes from a group of deer when the predator, lurking behind the thick bushes, suddenly jumps onto the prey and devours it. The forest returns to it its piercing silence once the 'show' of hunger, pain and survival ends.
