Be it waterfalls, high ranges, or iconic places like Mananchira and Tali, Kozhikode offers an endless list of experiences.

How can this city not attract visitors? The reasons are many. From historically significant landmarks to dreamy beaches and irresistible delicacies, Kozhikode is a destination that consistently amazes. And the allure isn't just limited to Kozhikode city. Every nook and corner of the district is a traveller's delight. Be it waterfalls, high ranges, or iconic places like Mananchira and Tali, the region offers an endless list of experiences.

Beaches that echo history
The beaches of Kozhikode are rich in history and heritage as well. Among them, Kappad Beach stands out as especially significant, as it was here that Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama first landed in Kerala. The arrival of these Europeans indeed changed the course of the region's history. This iconic beach is a must-visit stop in Kozhikode.

Then there's Kozhikode Beach, Beypore Port, and Valiyangady, all of which are equally captivating. The Kozhikode beach and the Valiyangady market, which lies adjacent to it, were once the pulsating commercial heart of the city. At the same time, Beypore played a crucial role in historical trade ties with Arab, Asian, and European merchants. Beypore is also known for the traditional handcrafting of wooden dhows (known as uru).

Tucked slightly away from the city is Kolavi Beach, often dubbed 'Mini Goa' for its scenic combination of sea, mangroves and river. The Kolavipalam Bridge is another popular spot. Beaches such as Payyoli, Thikkodi Drive, and Vadakara Beach, along with their adjoining parks, continue to attract visitors throughout the year.

Thusharagiri features a confluence of three falls as it combines with two other falls, namely Mazhavilchattam and Thumpithullumpara. The site also includes a hanging bridge and a unique hollow shade tree. Arippara Waterfall, located in Anakkampoyil near Thiruvambady, is a year-round crowd puller.

Nearby is the Narangathodu Waterfall, situated between Anakkampoyil and Pullurampara, which is especially popular during the summer months. A few other notable falls in the area include Arippara Waterfalls, Marippuzha, Vellarimala, and Tusharagiri.

However, Pathankayam, part of the Narangathodu stream system, has seen several tragic incidents. Its slippery rocks and deep crevices have proven dangerous, so visitors must exercise extreme caution.

Mananchira is often considered the beating heart of the city, a favourite hangout for locals who spend evenings there. European traders named Mittayitheruvu (Sweet Meat Street) after the famous Kozhikode halwa sold here. Over time, this iconic street evolved into a bustling commercial zone, including several clothing stores.

Sarovaram Biopark, Valiyangady Market, the centuries-old Tali Shiva Temple, and the Planetarium offer a range of experiences that blend nature, tradition, science, and commerce. Those interested in martial arts can visit the renowned CVN Kalari Sangham. Other must-visit locations include Pookkadu Kalalayam, Thekkepuram Village, Thikkodu Guest House and Velliyankallu Island.

Scenic hideaways
Kariyathupura, located in the Peruvannamuzhi Lake region, is a picturesque destination renowned for its lush grasslands and stunning mountain vistas. Hence, the area has also been nicknamed as 'Thekkady of Malabar', ‘Ooty of Malabar’, etc. The Kakkayam Dam, associated with Malabar's first hydroelectric project on the Kuttyadi River, is located nearby, as is the Peruvannamuzhi Reservoir.

Urakkuzhi Waterfall, although beautiful, is also hazardous due to its unpredictable terrain. For a safer natural retreat, Janakikkadu offers a serene forest environment just 7 km from Kuttiady in the Maruthonkara panchayat. With its cool climate, it's an ideal summer hideout.

Another scenic location is Vayalada, located about 12 km from Balussery. Sitting at an altitude of 2,000 feet, Vayalada offers panoramic views that are a welcome respite from the city's hustle and bustle.

Ecotourism escapes
Kozhikode boasts several ecotourism spots, including Iringal Craft Village, Vellarimala Ecotourism, and Kakkad Ecotourism.

Iringal Craft Village, situated on the banks of the Kuttiady River, showcases the work of local artisans. Multiple stalls here exhibit and sell exquisite handicrafts, making it a major draw for visitors. Kakkad Ecotourism, near Engapuzha and nestled at the foot of Koombanmala and Athikkodumala, is also gaining popularity.

The Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary, easily accessible from the city, is spread across small islands where the Kadalundi River meets the Arabian Sea. Kallayi River and the once-thriving timber industry of Kallayi on its banks are also worth a visit.

Museums and monuments
Kozhikode is home to several museums and art galleries, including the Krishna Menon Museum and Art Gallery and the Pazhassi Raja Museum and Art Gallery, both of which are integral to any Kozhikode itinerary.

The Mishkal Mosque, located in Kuttichira, is nearly seven centuries old and holds a vital place in Kerala's Islamic history. It also has a key place in Kerala's tourism map.  St. Mary's Church, also known as the English Church, is located at Nadakkavu. Initially built during British rule in 1860, it has undergone several renovations over the years.

The Tali Shiva Temple, once a major temple of the Kozhikode Zamorins (Samoothiris), is another prominent landmark of religious and historical significance.

Gateway to Wayanad
Once you've explored all that Kozhikode has to offer, head towards Thamarassery pass, also known as Wayanad pass. The winding mountain pass, with its nine hairpin bends, leads you into the misty heights of Wayanad, opening the door to a whole new array of natural wonders in between them.
