Kerala's Ilaveezhapoonchira poised for adventure tourism and bus connectivity

A report recommending Ilaveezhapoonchira as an ideal location for an adventure tourism project will soon be handed over to the Tourism Department. Following a directive from Kerala Tourism Minister P A Mohamed Riyas, an expert team recently visited the site and prepared a blueprint for developing an adventure tourism project in the region. A detailed study to identify specific projects for implementation will begin shortly. The proposed adventure tourism hub is planned at Kallumala, based on a memorandum submitted to the Minister by Jose K Mani MP.

Project details
Jose K Mani has announced that Rs 25 lakh from the MP fund has been allocated for constructing an amenity centre on land owned by the Melukavu Panchayat at Knan Naadu Junction, which serves as the gateway to Ilaveezhapoonchira. The amenity centre aims to provide essential infrastructure for visitors. In addition, a bridge and check dam will be built across the Knan Thodu stream at Knan Naad Junction as part of efforts to improve road access to Muniyara, a vantage point that offers sweeping views of Ilaveezhapoonchira and its surroundings.

Bus service to Poonjira soon
Meanwhile, possibilities have emerged for introducing a KSRTC bus service through Ilaveezhapoonchira, connecting Kottayam and Idukki districts. Directions have been given to start a bus service from Kottayam to Kattappana via this scenic route. The proposed route would run along the Kottayam – Pala – Erattupetta – Melukavumattom – Kanjiram Kavala – Melukavu – Peringali – Knanad – Ilaveezhapoonchira – Chakkikkavu – Koovappally – Moolamattom – Idukki – Kattappana route. Some culvert works are currently underway along this stretch in the Idukki district, and the bus service will be launched once they are completed. Officials noted that the route promises travellers a rich scenic experience.
