Social media has a powerful way of shattering long-held stereotypes, especially when it comes to international perceptions of India. A viral video by American travel influencer Charlie Evans has taken the internet by storm, offering a refreshing and eye-opening perspective on the southern state of Kerala. Titled 'Don't go to Kerala', the reel has already amassed over two million views, capturing the attention of global travellers.
Despite the provocative title, Charlie's message is quite the opposite. Having spent the last six months exploring northern India, the Miami-based creator admitted that his journey south completely shattered his preconceived notions. Sharing his thoughts on Instagram, he marvelled at the warmth of the locals, the pristine environment, and the world-class standards of healthcare and Ayurveda in the state.
An admirable sense of civic pride
Charlie begins his praise by highlighting the remarkable cleanliness of Kerala. Pointing to his immediate surroundings, he notes how public spaces are beautifully maintained and free of litter, reflecting a deep-seated civic consciousness among the residents that sets it apart from many other destinations.
Sharp dressing and Miami vibes
Another pleasant surprise for the American traveller was the locals' impeccable sense of style. He notes that people dress exceptionally well, often sporting smart collared shirts and trousers. For Charlie, who hails from Miami, the blend of modern styling and traditional attire created a sophisticated, laid-back vibe that felt instantly welcoming.
Literacy and language skills
The vlogger also touches upon Kerala's reputation as India's most literate state. He points out that language is rarely a barrier for international tourists, as even everyday citizens are highly articulate and comfortably converse in English alongside their native tongue, Malayalam.
A beautiful model of communal harmony
Perhaps the most profound takeaway for Charlie was the seamless religious harmony in Kerala. He describes his admiration for how diverse communities—including Hindus, Muslims, Christians, and Jews—coexist in perfect peace and mutual respect. For him, this unity in diversity is the true essence of the state.
Having commenced his Kerala adventure on 28 July, Charlie plans to continue his journey through the state until October 25. His viral video serves as a glowing testament to why this coastal paradise remains a must-visit destination on the global tourism map.
