Following the disappearance of Kerala trekker Sharanya on Karnataka's Thandiyandamol trekking trail for four days last week, the state's forest department has closed the region for trekking until April 11. Now on, solo trekking will also not be allowed on this route. The authorities plan to increase safety services in the region's Kumara Hill trekking stretch as well. They plan to install directional boards, restrooms, and bio-toilets. Once reopened, trekkers are also expected to carry flashlights, whistles, and portable chargers with them for safety.

Police case
In Karnataka, the police have reportedly decided to investigate Sharanya's case following allegations from trekkers and even political parties that her survival story seems fake. Many allege that the trekker appears extremely healthy for someone who went without food for four days and demand that a hefty fine be imposed on her if her story is found to be fake. In Kerala too, certain trekkers, travellers and writers had alleged that there are many loopholes in Sharanya's case.

The Kodavas of the region also have a temple here, named the Padi Igguthppa Temple, which is worshipped as the provider of grains. The area is around 260 km from Bengaluru and just about 90 km from the Kannur airport.
