Munnar: The blooming of Neelakurinji flower has posed a serious logistical problem on the hills of Munnar. Though several arrangements have been put in place to regulate the inflow of visitors who visit the hills to view the flowers that bloom only once in 12 years, authorities are struggling to manage the crowd and the traffic snarls.

Adding to the disorder, the IMD issued a heavy rain warning in the coming days which has made the authorities ban travel to Munnar till further notice. A lack of coordination among government departments has ensured chaos in the tourist town and nearby areas.

The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) had planned to start a chain bus service between Munnar and Rajamala, but the state transporter is yet to commence it though it did hold the trial run.

The KSRTC officials protested the presence of parallel jeep services that eat into the corporation's revenue, but the police justified their service by saying that 10 jeeps have been allowed to transport visitors from the town to the hill in accordance with the recommendation of an official committee.

The KSRTC would not be launching the chain service unless the parallel services are kept off the road. The corporation has not allotted any additional buses to Munnar to start the chain service. The buses that served the rural areas of Idukki have been diverted to Rajamala, putting passengers in other areas into hardships.

The forest department had also promised to shift the ticket counter from the hydel park to the high-altitude stadium, but tickets are being sold from the counter near the entrance to the Rajamala.
