Kumarakom, one of the most renowned travel destinations in Kerala is gradually getting back to normal as tourists have started arriving again with the lifting of lockdown restrictions. According to estimates, around 2,500 guests stayed at the hotels and resorts in the region since November 1, and 1,500 tourists reached the place for houseboat trips.
Tourism activities are carried out in Kumarakom strictly adhering to COVID-19 protocols. “Resorts and hotels are receiving more bookings now,” said general manager of Coconut Lagoon G Sambhu.
Stakeholders in the travel sector are hopeful about attracting a larger number of guests during the holidays. Most of the tourists now are from Kerala. “Travellers from other states have not started arriving,” said an operator.
Precautions
All tourists are advised to undergo thermal scanning on arrival and their possessions, including luggage and mobiles, sanitised. People having high temperatures will be medical attention.
Rooms are also regularly sanitised. A room is let out to tourists only 48 hours after the previous occupant has vacated.
Restaurants
Similarly, tables in the restaurants are placed ensuring social distancing. After each guest has been served, the table is sanitised thoroughly. Moreover, customers and staff avoid physical contact.
Houseboats, homestays
The houseboats and homestays also follow COVID-19 protocols. Around 100 houseboats are based at Kumarakom and they are operating after carrying out proper maintenance.
It was on March 15, 2020, that tourism activities came to a halt at the destination in view of the pandemic.
