Pathanamthitta: The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has announced a new experiment as part of its measures to attract more passengers and boost revenue. The latest initiative involves hiring private tourist buses for its popular ‘budget tour packages.’

Initially, a 49-seater non-AC bus will be hired on a trial basis for the purpose for a month. “More private vehicles will be taken on rent if the experiment is successful,” said a KSRTC official.

The rent fixed for hiring private buses is Rs 13 per km up to a distance of 500 km, Rs 12.85 from 501-650 km and Rs 12.60 from 651-800 km. In addition, the driver will be paid a ‘bata’ (allowance) of Rs 4 per km.

Currently, KSRTC conducts budget tour packages from major depots with its fast passenger and super-fast class buses.
