In a significant development, France has declared that Indian students who have spent at least a semester of study in the country will be eligible for a short-term Schengen visa, valid for five years.

The criterion will be applicable to only those who possess at least a postgraduate degree or higher educational qualifications.

The scheme is part of a joint programme launched by the Indian and French governments as part of enhancing bilateral ties between the two countries. The scheme will help Indian students to study abroad and find placements in those countries. Schengen Visa facilitates free movement across all countries in Europe.

As some courses on the continent can be pursued with overall expenses falling below the Rs 5 lakh mark, it will enable Indian students to study abroad without burning a hole in their pockets.
