Thrissur: The iconic fireworks display at the Thrissur Pooram dwindled to mere wisps of smoke in the daylight on Saturday, a consequence of prolonged delays in festivities due to police restrictions.
The Paramekkavu fireworks, which began shortly after 7 am, have concluded. The Thiruvambady faction's fireworks followed. The vibrant and colourful fireworks that typically illuminate the night sky of Thrissur were reduced to faint trails of smoke due to the altered timing.
The pooram enthusiasts who stayed back to witness the colourful display left the Thrissur city disappointed on Saturday. The 'upachaaram cholli piriyal' ceremony, which concludes this year's pooram, will be held at noon, during which the date for next year's Thrissur Pooram will also be announced.
On Friday, the Thiruvambady section halted the festivities as police erected barricades during the ezhunallippu (procession) at the time of Madathil Varavu Panchavadyam. The Thiruvambady Devaswom protested by switching off the lights at the Pooram panthal in Naduvilal junction, marking a historic first.
Additionally, the Paramekkavil section's procession also faced police barricades, causing significant commotion. With the Thiruvambady section calling off the Pooram, the fate of the fireworks also became uncertain.
Following discussions with Minister K Rajan, the Thiruvambady faction agreed to conduct fireworks after Paramekkavu in the morning, prompting the pandal lights to be switched on.
