At a time when Delhi was gearing up for a tourism season with festivals, flights and even new heli-darshan programmes of Adi Kailash and Om Parvati, a 4.0 magnitude earthquake hit the capital at 5.36 am today. PM Modi has urged everyone to stay calm, follow precautions, and stay alert for possible aftershocks. Delhi is in a seismic zone IV, which makes it susceptible to moderate-strong earthquakes. Here are a few safety precautions for tourists: 

Tourists beware...
1) Identify safe zones indoors and outdoors with the help of your tour agent. As far as possible, stay indoors. If outside, move away from trees, electric connections and buildings. Avoid roads and bridges, especially if damaged by earthquakes. 
2) Be alert about local authorities' guidelines on evacuation routes, hazardous materials and the safety of buildings.
3) Know how to shut off gas and electricity supplies if required.
4) Practice the drill of drop, cover and hold on for protection.

5) If heavy furniture and appliances are in your living area, anchor them on the floors or walls. Move away from glass furniture and windows. 
6) Prepare an emergency kit with flashlights, extra batteries, medicines required, pipe wrenches to turn off water and grass, a first aid kit, a portable radio, enough water and purification tablets + chlorine bleach, canned food, waterproof plastic bags and camp stove.
