Kottayam: The Southern Railway has announced two special trains from Kerala to Velankanni ahead of the annual festival at the iconic pilgrimage centre. One train is from Ernakulam via Kottayam – Punalur, while the other is from Thiruvananthapuram via Nagercoil. The Velankanni pilgrimage season is from August 29 to September 8. Pilgrims visit the Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health, also known as the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Velankanni, during this period every year.
Ernakulam – Velankanni
1) 06061 Ernakulam Junction – Velankanni (August 27, September 3 and 10): The train leaves Ernakulam at 11.50 pm and reaches Kottayam at 12.45 am, Changanassery at 1 am and Velankanni at 3.15 pm.
2) 06062 Velankanni – Ernakulam Junction (August 28, September 4 and 11): The train departs from Velankanni at 6.40 pm and reaches Changanassery at 9.47 am next morning. Kottayam arrival time – 10.04 am, Ernakulam arrival time – 11.55 am.
Thiruvananthapuram – Velankanni
1) 06115 Thiruvananthapuram Central – Velankanni (August 27, September 3): The train departs Thiruvananthapuram Central at 3.25 pm and reaches Velankanni at 3.55 am early morning.
2) 06116 Velankanni – Thiruvananthapuram Central (August 28, September 4): The return trip starts at 7.30 pm from Velankanni and reaches Thiruvananthapuram Central at 6.55 am.
‘’Earlier, there were trains only from Punalur to Velankanni. I had requested the railway minister to allow special trains from the Thiruvananthapuram region to Velankanni for the pilgrims from South Kerala. New special services have been allowed this year based on that,’’ said Mavelikkara MP Kodikunnil Suresh.
Traffic regulation
Nilambur – Kottayam Express (16325) would be regulated as the old walking bridge at the Kottayam railway station is being dismantled. The train will end its trip at Ettumanoor on August 19, 20, 21, 24, 26, 30 and 31. There will be no train service between Ettumanoor and Kottayam on these days. Meanwhile, the Kottayam – Nilambur Express (16326) will start from Ettumanoor on August 23 and 29. Mangaluru – Thiruvananthapuram North (06164) special train will be delayed by 30 minutes today as well as on August 26.
