For quite a while, Indian tourists performing the Gujarati folk dance, 'Garba', have been making negative headlines across the world. It's just been a few weeks since a group of Indians performed the dance on the airport tarmac in Vietnam.
Videos of similar scenes on the Great Wall of China and in the Hanoi Street of Vietnam too had gone viral a while ago. Now, the 'garba' gangs have reached Kerala as well. The latest public place where a group broke out into a garba is Kochi's renowned Water Metro.
However, the response from the public to videos of the performance have not been entirely welcoming. Comments like 'North, please don't spoil Kerala', 'Best example of North's civic sense', and 'Should take legal action' are posted on the video. A few of the comments also highlighted that this was a shared public space, not a stage.
"Respecting shared public spaces is just as important as expressing yourself," said another comment on the video.
A few people also raised safety concerns, noting that a single person's carelessness during a water journey could change the situation, and that such activities should not be encouraged. Another person said such celebrations could be held on a private boat or ship, but not on public transport systems.
Meanwhile, there are also a few who say that any celebration is good as long as there are no safety issues. The Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) did not respond when Onmanorama reached out for their reaction on the incident.
