Green marshals to be deployed in Kerala for women-friendly tourism

The Kerala Tourism department is mulling over deploying green marshals at prominent tourism centres across the state to ensure the safety of women tourists and provide them with hygienic conditions. The project would be launched at Fort Kochi, Munnar, Kovalam and Alappuzha in the initial phase. The marshals will be in charge of ensuring the safety of the women tourists, maintaining hygiene, encouraging responsible behaviour among tourists and creating ecological awareness.

Women guides and drivers would be appointed as part of the project. The tourism department will provide training for the women who are selected for the green marshals program. Besides, tourism projects initiated by women, homestays for women and responsible tourism projects would be developed in the later stages. Meanwhile, gender audits have been completed at 20 major tourist spots in the state to promote a women-friendly atmosphere.
