Kerala is experiencing heavy rainfall in multiple districts since Friday night. While a red alert is in place in various districts today, extreme rainfall is predicted in Kasaragod, Kannur, Wayanad, Kozhikode, and Malappuram in the coming days as well. Several people have lost their lives in Idukki and Kottayam following landslides. Following inclement weather, a holiday has also been declared for educational institutions in Idukki, Palakkad, Malappuram, Wayanad, Kozhikode, Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta and Kottayam. Heavy flooding and waterlogging have also been reported across various districts including Pathanamthitta, Idukki and Kottayam.
Updates for tourists
Red Alert
Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod are on red alert. This refers to expecting heavy rainfall in the next 24 hours.
Orange and Yellow Alerts
Ernakulam, Thrissur, and Palakkad are on Orange Alert, and Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, and Alappuzha are on Yellow Alert.
Special advisory issued for Kerala Tourism dept and DTPCs
The following restrictions will be implemented at Kerala's tourist spots following heavy rainfall in the state:
a) In districts under Red and Orange alerts and the neighbouring districts where the rains are intensifying, restrictions will be in place at waterfalls, reservoirs and other water-based tourist destinations. They will remain in force until the weather warnings are withdrawn.
b) Access to hilly regions prone to landslides and mudslides will be restricted until the rain subsides.
c) On roads leading to hilly regions and those vulnerable to landslides, warnings and safety boards will be installed.
Changes in events
1) Aranmula Parthasarathy Temple's vallasadya ritual will be held without the journey of the palliyodam boats. The ritual will be limited to the vallasadya feasts.
Restricted entry to tourism spots
1) All tourist spots under Ernakulam DTPC will remain closed today.
2) All high-range tourist spots of Palakkad district, including Nelliyampathy and Malampuzha, have been closed.
3) Thiruvananthapuram's Ponmudi eco-tourism centre has been closed.
4) Night travel to hilly regions of Thrissur district will be completely prohibited or strictly regulated from 7 pm to 6 am. Police and the Motor Vehicles Department will conduct strict inspections at check posts and key roads to enforce the restrictions.
5)Trekking and wilderness camping in Thrissur's hilly and forest areas have been temporarily banned. The District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC), Forest Department and Police have been directed to ensure that tourists visiting designated destinations receive proper safety warnings and guidance.
