Online seat allocation for top engineering institutes in the country will commence next month.
The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (or JoSAA) will conduct the registration and choice filling for admission to the BTech, BE, BArch, B Planning, 5-year MTech/MSc and 4-year BS programmes at 114 premier institutes, including 23 Indian Institutes of Technology, 31 National Institutes of Technology, 26 Indian Institutes of Information Technology, Indian Institutes of Engineering Science and Technology in Shibpur and 33 other centrally funded institutes.
The admission process that involves six rounds of allocation would begin on 12 September. The allocations are via online mode.
JoSAA has been set up by the Union Ministry of Education to manage and regulate the seat allocation or admissions to the above institutes.
A combination of a program and an institute is referred to as an ‘academic program’ in JoSAA. It is similar to the ‘option’ in the Kerala entrance.
There is no fees for registration and choice filling.
Meanwhile, the JoSAA for the 2022-23 allotment would continue to function until 21 October.
Who are eligible
Those who have qualified the Joint Entrance Examination-Main or JEE-Main can register for admission to all the institutes (NIT+) except the IITs. The candidates need JEE Advanced score for entry to IITs.
How to make choices
The candidates should carefully read the ‘Business Rules’ on the website before registering.
Qualified candidates can do choice filling to both IITs and NIT+ institutes. The choice filling should be done in the order of preference of the institutes and the programs. The candidates could submit any number of choices; there is no limit for this. The selected choices should then be locked.
If the choices aren’t locked by the candidates, then the software would automatically lock the last entered choices when the session gets timed out.
The candidates should keep the printed copy of the locked choices for future references. The details about the programs in each institute, their fees and basic facilities are available on the website.
Marking the preference
Some candidates may be eligible for allotment to up to four types of seats.
1) BE/ BTech through the first paper in the Mains
2) BArch through 2 A paper
3) B Planning through 2 B paper
4) IIT via JEE-Advanced
Even though they are eligible for these seats, they would get allotted to only one of these. So, the preference should be chosen carefully. The choices could be changed after studying the mock seat allocation that gets published on 18 and 20 September.
Freeze, Float, Slide
The seat should be accepted by downloading the ‘provisional seat allocation letter’ as and when the candidates get the allotment.
They should also submit one of Freeze, Float or Slide options
(Freeze: satisfied with the seat; no change required. Float: Accepts the offered seat but in case they get a better preference in another institute they are willing to accept. Slide: The candidate is interested in moving to another program of higher preference within the same institute. The candidate’s participation in the upcoming rounds would be based on these choices. Those who opt ‘Freeze’ will not be able to choose ‘Float/Slide’).
When to pay fee
The candidates should then pay a seat acceptance fee of Rs 35,000. It is Rs 15,000 for candidates of Scheduled Caste/Tribe categories and persons with disabilities. The fees could be paid via UPI, net banking, credit and debit cards and State Bank of India’s e–challan.
Where to report
The documents should be verified online at the reporting centre. The respective IIT or NIT would be the reporting centre. The candidate would be out of the allotment process if online reporting is not done at the right time.
Double reporting
If the candidate gets transferred to an IIT from a non-IIT institute, he/she should convince the IIT that all the documents are proper and correct. If the transfer is from an IIT to a non-IIT, the documents should be submitted at the concerned department of the new institute. It means that candidates who seek transfers like these should do online reporting twice at two different institutes. Even after receiving the seat, the candidate can back out of that seat until the fifth round of allotment.
