New Delhi: The All-India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) will enrol around 700 faculty members of IITs and NITs to speed up the procedures for increasing the seats in engineering colleges in the country.

AICTE has decided to remove the cap on the intake of students at top engineering educational institutions from the coming academic year and invited applications from colleges in this regard. The teachers at IITs and NITs will be tasked with examining the academic standards of the institutions which apply for increasing their seats. Currently, the maximum number of students who could be admitted to a branch in an engineering college is 240.

AICTE has already prepared guidelines for allowing increased intake based on factors such as faculty strength, laboratory facilities and basic infrastructure.
