Cinemas are set to sizzle this weekend with three big releases. There’s a superstar returning in one of his most intense roles yet, a Malayalam drama that’s already got audiences humming its songs, and a globe-trotting spy thriller built for the big screen. Here’s a look at the films you might want to book tickets for before the weekend rush.
Coolie (Tamil)
The wait is almost over for one of the most talked-about releases of the year. Rajinikanth’s ‘Coolie’ will storm into cinemas this weekend, promising an intense dose of action and drama. Touted as a period gangster thriller, the film blends high-octane sequences with a gritty, larger-than-life narrative.
Joining the superstar on screen are Aamir Khan, Nagarjuna, and Upendra, with Aamir making a special cameo appearance. Shruti Haasan takes on the female lead role.
The Censor Board has cleared 'Coolie' with an ‘A’ certificate, citing its graphic violence and raw treatment. It’s the first time in years that a Rajinikanth film has earned an adult rating — and early buzz suggests it could be the most violent outing of his career.
Releasing on August 14.
Thalavara (Malayalam)
Directed by Akhil Anilkumar, ‘Thalavara’ brings Arjun Ashokan to the screen in a striking new avatar, joined by Revathy Sharma, Devadarshini, and Sarath Sabha. Produced by Mahesh Narayanan and Shebin Backer, the film has already been making waves. Its catchy track “Kandu Kandu Poochendu” has been trending, while the eye-catching posters have only added to the growing excitement ahead of release.
Releasing on August 15.
War 2 (Hindi)
‘War 2’ raises the stakes in Yash Raj Films’ ever-expanding Spyverse. Directed by Ayan Mukerji, the big-budget sequel to the 2019 blockbuster reunites audiences with Hrithik Roshan’s Agent Vikram, now on the trail of the elusive rogue Agent Kabir, played by N. T. Rama Rao Jr., in a tense, globe-spanning game of cat and mouse.
Joining them is Kiara Advani in a crucial role, adding another layer to the high-octane narrative. Mounted on a massive scale with a reported budget of ₹400 crore, War 2 promises adrenaline-pumping action sequences, exotic locations, and the kind of spectacle that makes it one of the most expensive Indian films ever produced.
