Various porotta hashtags have been trending on the social media platforms following the Karnataka AAR’s decision to include porotta in the slab that attracted 18% GST. However, a porota song too has been doing the rounds as the common protest anthem of the Malayalis worldwide.
The porotta song was released by Mallu Café, a prominent Facebook group. The lines of this interesting song are penned by Prashant IAS (popularly known as collector bro) who is also a member of the group. Shibu Joshua and Riyas Muhammad have composed the song. Meanwhile, the camera is cranked by Ummar Gulmohar and the editing is by Aneesh Kumar. Siyas and Sreenath Narayanan have handled the VFX of the video song. The porotta song is helmed by the director duo Datus Velayudhan and Lini Subash, a Mumabai based film maker. Only the members of the Mallu Café have been involved in the production of the porotta song which is made on zero budget. The video had to be filmed at various locations as the makers couldn’t see each other due to the lockdown.
Meanwhile, the makers of the porotta song are thrilled that they could coordinate well and complete the song even without seeing each other. Mallu Café has earlier grabbed attention for coming up with unique and interesting ideas during the lockdown period. Moreover, the porotta song marks the reunion of a music band that was disbanded some time ago.
The porotta song is the perfect example of how Malayalis have a great sense of humor. Besides, this song reminds us that food too is part of the struggle to uphold one’s culture and cuisine.
The song was released through the Facebook pages of celebrities like Jayasuriya, Anoop Menon, Nikhila Vimal, director Omar Lulu, cinematographer Sujith Vasudev, noted vlogger Vinod Narayanan, singer Sithara, disaster management expert Murali Thummarukudi and model Ajmal Khan.
