Prawn-rice dumplings garnished with scraped coconut

Like the name hints, unda puttu is simply steamed rice dumplings. The flour that is used for making puttu is kneaded to a smooth dough to make unda puttu and filled with spicy stuffing before steam-cooking.

The stuffing can be minced meat, vegetables or prawns. You can go for the sweet version also by filling it with coconut and grated jaggery.

Ingredients

1/2 kg prawns cleaned
2.
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
Salt as required
1 1/2 tsp chilli powder
1/4 tsp fennel powder

2 tbsp oil

Oil as required

4 Onions chopped
2 green chillies chopped
Salt as required
1/4 tsp turmeric powder

Curry leaves
Coriander leaves

2 cups of rice flour
8.
Salt
Water

1 coconut scraped

Preparation
Mix prawns with ingredient no 2 and cook it
Lightly fry the cooked prawns and set aside
Heat oil in a pan and saute ingredient no 2
Add the fried prawns to this and mix well
Add coriander leaves and curry leaves
Mix well and turn off the stove
Add salt and water to the rice flour
Mix it well until a smooth dough is formed, sprinkling water as required
Roll the dough into small balls and flatten it
Spoon in the prawns mix filling in the middle of these
Cover the dough and roll them into balls
Roll them in grated coconut and then steam cook
