Actor Mammootty is all set for the re-release of his 1989 epic movie 'Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha,' which won him one of his National Awards for Best Actor. In a chat with actor-director Ramesh Pisharody, Mammootty recently narrated many interesting behind-the-scenes stories about the movie, which will be re-released on February 7, Friday. During the conversation, the actor, who has played many bygone-era characters, said he is allergic to rolled gold. The skin reaction, often called 'nickel allergy' or 'metal allergy', is a condition experienced by many people. The brass or copper in the jewellery can react with the layer of gold, resulting in it wearing off. The exposed metal, especially nickel, in such jewellery, can trigger rashes, itching or even redness of skin in certain people.

It should be noted that nickel allergy, while often associated only with jewellery, can be caused even by everyday items like zippers, coins, frames of specs, detergents, certain electronic items and even cosmetics, says the Mayo Clinic. Once you develop this allergy, you can always be sensitive to the metal that causes it.

What causes the allergy, how to prevent
The reason that triggers the allergic reaction is still not known. However, having a family history of the allergy can be a trigger for the development of the reaction. Those who are sensitive to other metals can also be allergic to nickel. All you can do to avoid the allergy is prevent exposure to it for a long time. As the metal is part of many everyday products, it might not be easy. However, you can use test kits at home to check whether the reaction you are experiencing is a nickel allergy. There are also barrier products available in the market, like 'nickel guard,' which help create protection for your skin from items that contain nickel.
