After Asian countries like Hong Kong, Singapore, and Thailand experienced a new surge of COVID-19 infections, it has been reported that India is also experiencing an increasing number of cases. The Omicron sub-variants like JN 1 and its descendants LF 7 and NB.1.18 are apparently causing the surge this time, and this week, there are around 257 active cases in the country. Regardless, the majority of them are mild infections that do not need hospitalisation, according to officials.

Kerala has 69 cases and recorded the most infections, followed by Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu. Two people, who had serious health conditions, also died in Mumbai following COVID-19. According to Dr Amar Fettle of the Kerala state health department, the rise in numbers can be due to our poor cough hygiene practices and seasonal temperature fluctuations.

Here's what you should know:
1) Always carry a handkerchief with you to cover your nose and mouth when sneezing and coughing, especially in crowded places.
2) Do not share the handkerchief, and carry spares. Wash them regularly with hot water and soap.
3) Sanitise your hands whenever required.
4) Recently, scientists explained that COVID-19 is now considered 'endemic,' which means the virus is much more predictable and circulating at lower levels. While new variants can emerge, severe illness isn't common.
5) Experts say that booster doses are unnecessary even for the elderly unless there is a clear threat or instruction from doctors.
