Social media is a powerful platform where information is passed to huge masses in less time. Interesting information about food items and ingredients is often spread through social media, influencing people's diets and food habits. However, it is difficult to understand whether this information and ‘facts’ are true or just myths. Some might even ruin our sleep, especially in this age where food has become a celebration rather than a necessity.
Is avocado fat harmful?
Avocados are cultivated in farmlands in the high ranges of Wayanad and Idukki districts of Kerala. Avocados are generally considered healthy as they contain nutrients and fat. However, there is also an argument that the high fat content in avocado would cause weight gain and isn’t as beneficial as we think.
Avocados are high in monounsaturated fat and low in saturated fat. The monounsaturated fat contains oleic acid, a fatty acid found in olives and olive oil. Oleic acid is generally considered healthy. So, there is no scientific backing for the claim that those who wish to shed weight shouldn’t eat avocados. However, it should be consumed in moderation as avocado is a calorie-dense food item.
Tomatoes that do not go stale
Most people get worried when the tomatoes they buy remain fresh and plump for weeks. There have been rumours on social media that tomatoes are laced with harmful pesticides to keep them fresh. However, it is likely to be a myth as natural mutations in certain genes in tomatoes would slow down the rate of ripening. Many private producers include these genes in their tomato seeds. These tomatoes do not ripen quickly and are safe to be consumed.
Is Chaya Mansa poisonous?
Chaya Mansa, or cnidoscolus aconitifolius, is a popular green leafy shrub from Mexico. This plant with big leaves is extremely popular in Kerala. However, it contains high level of hydrocyanic acid, which could cause health problems in humans. Chaya Mansa should be cooked for at least 20 minutes before straining the cooking water and then washing the leaves again under running water. Its extract could cause skin discomfort or temporary blindness if it gets into the eyes. In a study conducted in rats, it was found that Chaya Mansa extract lowers the blood sugar levels and regulates the blood pressure. However, scientists have yet to understand whether it would be as effective in humans.
