Kannur: As part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, intensive awareness programmes and screening camps will be held in Kannur, Kozhikode, Wayanad, and Kasaragod districts starting October 1. The World Health Organisation has emphasised that strong awareness campaigns and early detection systems are essential to reduce breast cancer deaths. In line with this, the Malabar Cancer Care Society launched the Breast Cancer Brigade Project in 2017, with actor Manju Warrier serving as its brand ambassador.

Awareness for 8.9 lakh women
Under the project, 19,270 selected women volunteers have received intensive training. Through a door-to-door campaign, 8.9 lakh women across 2,15,300 households in the four districts of North Malabar were educated about breast cancer. During these village-level campaigns, 337 women were identified with suspected symptoms and were subsequently provided with mammograms, ultrasounds and NFNC examinations at the screening camps.
