Life after retirement is a time many dream about. However, not everyone finds that period easy to live through, thanks to numerous issues like illnesses, Empty Nest Syndrome, anxiety problems and more. Elderly people are also more likely to get addicted to certain medicines, intoxicating substances or even some habits. The family should help and support their loved ones to identify and quit these addictions. Moreover, self-awareness is also key to staying away from various addictions that could cause serious problems in life and be in a healthy mental state.

Screen and lottery addiction
Many elderly people become screen addicts as they scroll through reels to kill time or because they do not have anything else to do. Older people should realise that they are missing out on social interactions and other creative activities when they spend time scrolling through reels on mobile phones. All kinds of entertainment, including watching television, are essential, but these habits shouldn’t make you idle. Some people spend considerable money trying their luck in lotteries. Such habits that drain your bank account should be checked. One should also be alert against online scams and other fraudulent activities that particularly target elderly people.

No prescription medicine
Elderly people often consult doctors for pain, sleeplessness, constipation and gas trouble. If there isn’t a severe underlying issue, the doctors might prescribe painkillers or other temporary medications to ease their discomfort. However, many memorise these prescriptions or the names of the medicines to buy them as and when they desire. Meanwhile, some others take medicines for sleeplessness or constipation in high dosages without proper instruction from the doctor. Such people can get addicted to sleeping pills in their old age. Elderly people should take medicines only as directed by a doctor. Family members should ensure they do not resort to self-treatment and consult a doctor in case of emergencies.

Alcohol and other intoxications
Relying on alcohol to kill time or escape from loneliness may later become an addiction. If someone who drinks occasionally gradually increases the quantity of their alcohol intake, then it is a clear sign of danger. It is better to say goodbye to friendships that thrive on alcohol consumption. Chewing pan and smoking may lead to severe health problems. It is better not to annoy others by spitting out betel juice that stains or by blowing rings of smoke. Diverting your mind to creative activities and positive thoughts may help you avoid such intoxications.
