Congress worker hacked to death at Chavakkad

Thrissur: A 44-year-old Congress worker, who was brutally attacked by a group of armed assailants at Chavakkad in Kerala's Thrissur district, succumbed to the injuries on Wednesday morning. The deceased, Puthuveettil Noushad, 44, was a booth president of the party.

A 14-member gang hacked Noushad and three of his friends at Punna near Chavakkad on Tuesday at around 6:30pm, the police said.

Though Noushad's friends tried to save him from the assailants, their efforts went in vain. They sustained injuries during the attack and are undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Thrissur.

Noushad, who was rushed to the hospital with critical injuries, died around 9:30am on Wednesday.

Four of the assailants have been identified as SDPI workers. None of the attackers have been arrested so far.

The Congress alleged a deep-rooted conspiracy behind the murder.

KPCC president Mullappally Ramachandran, Leader of Opposition Ramesh Chennithala and MP from Thrissur T N Prathapan visited the spot.

K Sudhakaran, MP from Kannur, demanded that those who hatched the conspiracy should be arrested. The administration should take steps to resist the terror unleashed by SDPI, he added.

Meanwhile, the police have formed a special team to nab the killers.

Congress had observed a hartal at Guruvayur on Wednesday.
