Unnao rape survivor discharged from AIIMS, to stay at hospital's hostel for a week

SC grants 2 weeks to CBI for complete probe in Unnao rape survivor's accident case
In July this year, a truck rammed into the car she was travelling in with some family members and her lawyer. Two of her aunts died in the road accident.

New Delhi: The Unnao rape survivor was discharged from AIIMS, Delhi, where she underwent treatment following a car accident, sources said on Wednesday.

The woman was admitted to AIIMS following the accident in Raebareli on July 28. A speeding truck had hit the car in which the rape survivor was travelling with her family members and lawyer. Two of her aunts were killed, while she and her lawyer were critically injured.

On the Supreme Court's order, her family is under the CRPF security cover.

Following the discharge, she and her family members - mother, two sisters and a brother - will stay at the hostel of the AIIMS' Jai Prakash Narayan Trauma Centre for a week on the directions of a Delhi court.

The court has issued a slew of directions under the witness protection guidelines for arranging accommodation for the 2017 Unnao rape survivor and her family in Delhi after the Uttar Pradesh government said they wanted to reside in the national capital apprehending threat to their lives in their home state.

The rape survivor's mother had a discussion with the judge about their relocation arrangements and said they be allowed to live in Delhi as they apprehend threat to their lives and liberty in case they go back to their native village in Unnao district, a lawyer privy to the proceedings said.

The woman was allegedly kidnapped and raped by expelled BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar in Unnao in 2017, when she was a minor. The court had framed charges against Sengar and co-accused Shashi Singh in the case.

Court seeks Apple Inc's help

Meanwhile, a Delhi court on Wednesday directed technology company, Apple Inc, to give location details of Kuldeep Singh Sengar on the day 17-year-old girl from Unnao was allegedly raped by him.

District Judge Dharmesh Sharma, holding an in-chamber proceedings, directed the iPhone-maker to file the reply by September 28 when it will next hear the matter, a lawyer related to the case said.

The court also recorded the statement of a CISF official in the case related to the murder of Unnao rape survivor's father.

CBI probe into accident case

The Supreme Court has granted two more weeks to the CBI to complete its ongoing probe into the road accident in which the Unnao rape survivor and her lawyer were critically injured and two of her aunts killed.

A bench of justices Deepak Gupta and Aniruddha Bose was told by the CBI that the lawyer, who had sustained injuries in the road accident and is undergoing treatment at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here, has still not gained consciousness and his statement has not been recorded yet.

The top court, while granting two more weeks to the CBI to complete the probe, said it would hear the case again in October.

The top court had on September 2 said it wanted "fair and speedy trial" in the case arising out of the rape of the minor, allegedly by Kuldeep Singh Sengar in Unnao.

On September 6, the apex court had granted CBI two-week time to complete the investigation into the road accident case.

In July this year, a truck rammed into the car she was travelling in with some family members and her lawyer. Two of her aunts died in the road accident.

She was airlifted from a hospital in Lucknow and brought to the AIIMS for better care.

The top court had earlier directed the Uttar Pradesh government to pay Rs 5 lakh to the lawyer, who is undergoing treatment.

On August 1, it had directed Uttar Pradesh government to provide Rs 25 lakh to the rape survivor as an interim compensation.

It had earlier ordered transfer of all the five related cases in the matter to Delhi but later modified its order putting in abeyance shifting of the accident case till the probe was completed.

The modification was done as due to shifting of the case, the local court was facing technical hurdle in passing orders of remand for the accused who are being arrested in course of the probe.

The court had said the order transferring the accident case "shall remain in abeyance for the period during which the said case remains under investigation, which we have stipulated in the order dated August 1, 2019, to be completed in a maximum period of 15 days, preferably within seven days. The order dated August 1, 2019, is modified accordingly".
