Congress party's interim president Sonia Gandhi's mother, Paolo Maino, passed away in Orbassano, Turin in northern Italy. She was 98.

Veteran leader Jairam Ramesh tweeted about the news of her demise. Sonia Gandhi had left on August 23 to visit her ailing mother.

However, according to some reports from Italy, she did not attend the funeral due to security reasons.

"Smt. Sonia Gandhi’s mother, Mrs. Paola Maino passed away at her home in Italy on Saturday the 27th August, 2022. The funeral took place yesterday," tweeted Jairam Ramesh.

Ms Maino had been staying with her other daughters in Italy. Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who were abroad, reportedly attended their grandmother's funeral.
