'Coffins' for Chennithala, Chandy outside DCC office

Coffins bearing the photos of senior leaders Oommen Chandy and Ramesh Chennithala were found outside the DCC office in Kochi.

Kochi: The workers of the Congress and some leaders are apparently in no mood to bury the hatchet over Rajya Sabha seat-sharing as 'coffins' of senior leaders Oommen Chandy and Ramesh Chennithala appeared in front of the District Congress Committee (DCC) office in Kochi on Saturday.

For a 'proper burial' the protestors added wreaths, black flags and posters decrying the 'inability' of the leaders to get prevent the seats from going to UDF allies.

The young cadres have been on a warpath ever since the top leadership decided to bring back KM Mani's Kerala Congress (M) to the UDF fold by offering the Rajya Sabha seat.

The posters said that both Chandy and Chennithala had betrayed the party and they had virtually died for the young minds.

After spotting the posters on Saturday, the DCC leadership quickly got it cleared.

The KC(M) on Friday announced its decision to return to the UDF fold, after the Congress pledged support for its candidate.

The seat is currently held by Rajya Sabha deputy chairman P J Kurian of the Congress who will retire on July 1. Jose K Mani will be the KC(M)'s candidate for the Rajya Sabha poll.

The KC(M) had walked out of the Congress-led UDF in August, 2016, ending over three-decade association, alleging 'insult' by the party leading the alliance.

After it snapped ties with the Congress nearly two years ago, the KC(M) maintained that it was keeping equidistance from the UDF, the CPM-led Left Democratic Front, as also the BJP, which was trying to create a sustainable political space for itself in the southern state.
