Thiruvananthapuram: Heavy rain that wreaked havoc in Kerala has claimed at least 11 lives.  Widespread damage was reported from across the state with several low-lying areas submerged in the incessant rain. Collectors of Kottayam, Idukki and Pathanamthitta, the worst-affected districts, have declared a holiday for all educational institutions on Tuesday.

Alappuzha collector has also declared holiday for educational institutions other than professional colleges in several taluks of the district.

In Ernakulam district, all schools including Kendriya Vidyalayas will remain shut on Tuesday.

Alert issued

People have been advised against travelling in heavy rain, especially during nights, due to possibility of landslips in hilly regions as heavy rain is likely to continue till July 17.

With the sea being rough, fishermen have been advised not to venture out to sea while the public has been asked not to go to beaches.

In some places, houses have suffered partial damage as trees got uprooted and fell on them.

Electric cables have been snapped in at least 700 spots in the state. Two houses at Muvattupuzha and Angamaly were damaged in the rain. Five families at Thekkekkara in Muvattupuzha were shifted.

Most of the roads in Kochi have been inundated with water.

At Puthiyangadi in Kozhikode, a tree fell on three moving cars and a parked one, injuring six people. At Vadakara, a mini cyclone damaged two houses and one mosque. Cyclone wreaked massive havoc in hilly areas of Kannur district also.
