Thiruvananthapuram: A 38-year-old woman scooter rider died as the vehicle toppled after a rope that got unfastened from a lorry entangled it on Sunday morning.
Anita, a resident of Laksham Veedu Colony at Thumpukal, Kulathur, Parassala, met with a tragic end a day before the housewarming of her new house.
She was heading for her work at a doctor's house at Ulloor in the city when the accident occurred around 6.30 am near the Karamana bridge on the Karamana-Kaliyikkavila national highway.
Anita got dragged on the road for some distance as the loose rope remained hooked to her scooter. She cried out, but the lorry driver did not hear her. The scooter toppled on to the divider after about 70 m.
A seriously injured Anita was rushed to the hospital, but her life could not be saved.
The woman was a divorcee and was working as a housemaid. She had also raised a loan to complete her house where she was to hold the housewarming on Monday. Her elder son Ankit is a plus-one student while daughter Soumya is in Class 8 and younger son Anush in Class 6.
The lorry was carrying goods from Tamil Nadu to the Chalai bazaar in the city. The police have taken into custody the driver, Chakravarthy from Tiruchirappalli. He has been charged with unintentional manslaughter.
