Open gymnasium to come up at Mananchira Square

Kozhikode: An open gymnasium would soon be set up at the Mananchira Square in Kozhikode city. It can be used by the city folks for free.

The facility would function from a specially built platform that would stretch from the main entrance of the Mananchira Square till the office of the District Sports Council, which is setting up the gym with the support of the Kozhikode Corporation.

The gym would have facilities to train under the watchful eyes of trainers during the mornings and evenings. The equipment is suitable for people, who generally frequent the Mananchira Square. Elderly would also be able to make use of the facility.

Fifteen gym equipment have arrived from Bengaluru. The equipment would be fixed to the ground using concrete. The works on concreting and levelling the ground have begun. No tree would be cut down in the process.

Once the equipment are fixed, seating facilities would be set up.

District Sports Council president O Rajagopal took the initiative to set up the gymnasium at a cost of Rs 20 lakh.

The gym would be opened for public before Vishu that falls in mid-April, Rajagopal said.

Kozhikode Sports Infrastructure Development and Social Welfare Cooperative Society has been tasked with setting up the gym. The society is headed by K J Mathai, a former president of the District Sports Council.
