CPM state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan has commented that his party's district conferences were not the reason for the spread of COVID cases in Kerala.

He was responding to media persons after the CPM's district conference in Kasaragod was planned to close on the same day of its inauguration owing to a High Court directive.

The court came down heavily on the party for assembling a sizeable crowd at Madikkai for the Kasaragod conference that was initially spread over three days.

Kodiyeri has said that the party's Thrissur conference that also began Friday will be wrapped up by Saturday evening. "The court order does not apply to Thrissur. But we will try to wrap up the conference by 4-5 pm (Saturday)."

Among district conferences, Alappuzha remains to be held (January 28-30, at Kanichukulangara) and the party is yet to take a call.

"We will decide on the Alappuzha conference later. There is still time for it. Anyway, COVID is not spreading because of this (conference)," said Kodiyeri.

Kerala's COVID tally has gone by over 80,000 in the last three days. There are 2,23,548 active cases of coronavirus infection in the state.

On Thursday, the state had logged it highest-ever single day tally of 46,387 cases while it recorded 41,668 fresh positives on Friday.
